Our First Wedding Anniversary

First Anniversary - JanessaMann.Com
We took the ferry across to Toronto Island

Nic and I got married June 20, 2015 in Ottawa, where we grew up. For our first anniversary, we decided we would go to Toronto Island for a beach day, and then have a delicious dinner out. Our original plans were much more grandiose-weekend hiking trip in Algonquin or on the Bruce Peninsula, bed & breakfast and a show in Stratford… But we realized that with a grad student and and under-employed-future-grad-student income, it made more sense to stick close to home.

Always use a protective pouch if using electronics at the beach!

Neither of us had been to the Islands before, so this was a lot of fun. We packed up all our essentials, and spent a really hot, relaxing day in the sun. Yes, I got a terrible burn despite repeat applications of sunscreen.

I love building sandcastles

Since Nic had strained his shoulder, we knew we wouldn’t be able to play any sports at the beach. We decided to pick up a bucket and some shovels to make a sandcastle-it was a lot of fun. People kept passing by it and saying how awesome it was, probably thinking it was made by children, not two twenty-five-year-olds. We had some good laughs.

We walked from Ward’s Island to Centre Island, which was much busier, and got some fresh pineapple juice.

Our friend Winston recommended Byblos, and it was delicious

Byblos is a Mediterranean restaurant in the Entertainment District, and they’re phenomenal. We each got a fancy cocktail (my cucumber, mint + vodka was perfect) and then shared some plates.

Our last dish arrived after I took this picture, and we had eaten too much of the food for me to take another one. Oops! We had the best, spiciest olives, cauliflower, fried chicken, and pide.

The waitress brought us some Turkish ice cream because she knew it was our anniversary-so sweet! The booth we sat in was also super romantic. I’m so glad we went there.

Our first year of marriage has been so wonderful. First and foremost, obviously it’s been awesome living with Nic-we don’t have to be long-distance anymore, or be worried we’ll miss the last bus home because we’re having a great conversation, and there’s always our favourite person to hang out with when we get home. Second, it’s been really cool to see our relationship evolve-we’ve seen each other through tough times, dashed hopes, and joys, and have learned how to be humble about our mistakes. Third, we’ve gotten to explore places together-not just our temporary city of Toronto, but our honeymoon in Nova Scotia, bringing Nic to Manitoba for my Grandpa’s funeral, and our dream trips (B.C., New Zealand and Australia…). I’m so happy we found each other, and I can’t wait for every single anniversary after this one.

After dinner we walked (I limped, I haven’t worn heels in months, and those four-inch babies were killing me) to the waterfront, shared a drink at the Amsterdam Brewery, and watched the sunset on the first day of summer.

Summer in the Six is Coming – Sangria in the Park!

This past Sunday was beautiful in Toronto! It was upwards of 20*, so after church and a great workout at the gym, we made some sangria and headed to the park.

Nic wasn’t too happy that I bought this thermos from the grocery store last summer, but now he loves it. We can bring hot coffee on hikes, or delicious sangria to hang out.

Of course I brought my KOBO and colouring book.

Easter Weekend in Ottawa

Easter Weekend in Ottawa - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.Ca

For Easter this year we got to go back to Ottawa. Because of the freezing rain Thursday night, our friend drove us in on Friday morning. We arrived too late to go to the Good Friday service, so we went to a GoodLife near my parents’ to deadlift. (Yeah, not going back to that club, it’s overrun with bros who wear cutoff Popeye’s shirts and improper form.)

We had a relaxing day with my parents talking, colouring, crosswording, reading, and “watching” March Madness (I went on Pinterest and probably read more).

Saturday morningwe got to go see Kelsey (and her dogs!) then went to get coffee.

Where would we go for coffee except Suzy Q’s for doughnuts! I had the carrot cake doughnut, the one in the middle. It was phenomenal.

It was so great to catch up with Kelsey and show her both our wedding album (she was my maid of honour, and we haven’t seen her since I made the album) and the 2015 album.

Saturday afternoon Dad went for a bike ride, so Mom, Nic and I went to the Greenbelt for a nice walk. The sun was so bright, so the snow was slowly melting.

Poor squirrel was being chased down. He had to run for his life.

A bag of seeds had obviously exploded, and this chipmunk was LOVING it.

We drove to Nic’s parents for dinner, and then went to Hogsback Falls with them for a nice walk. The sunset was beautiful.

Nic wore an adorable bowtie for Easter Sunday.

This is Flopsy. One of the youth brought his adorable bunny to church, and Mom and I were so happy to hold a bunny again.

Gypsy hated being held like that, but that’s the only way Flopsy likes it!

Happy Easter from us! We had Easter lunch at Nic’s parents’, and my parents came over. It’s so convenient having our parents live in the same city, and be friends! #InLawGoals

Sunday after my parents left, we went for a walk along the Ottawa river with Nic’s parents. It was a BEAUTIFUL day. SO bright.

What a wonderful walk and a wonderful weekend!

Weekend Getaway to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake

The first weekend in December, Nic and I drove down to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake for a nice date.

What an adorable squirrel!

Love dat husband.

Our bed-and-breakfast room was real into the Captain theme.

Of course, I had to go into the Christmas store.

For dinner we went to Kitchen76, the restaurant of The Two Sisters Vineyard. We shared a margherita pizza and one with spinach, truffle oil, mushrooms (I didn’t hate them cuz they were so small!) and pesto. The pizza was great, especially with the homemade chili sauce they provided. I also loved my Riesling, but that’s almost always the case.

Every year in Niagara-on-the-Lake they have the Candlelit Stroll, where we donated some money to get candles in containers, then walked around the beautiful homes listening to carollers and other acts.

It was really great weather for it, especially since I was wearing a skirt and tights for our dinner. Afterward, I got a caramel apple spice from Starbucks.

Saturday morning we had breakfast at the B&B, then walked around the town to check out the waterfront.

Our First Christmas Ornament

Yesterday marked 5 months of marriage with Nic! I decided I needed to make a “first Christmas” ornament for our first tree. I looked at different things on Pinterest (see my Christmas ornament board below) and eventually decided I wanted to x-stitch/embroider a hoop.

I love how simple the design is, but who knows, I may add some more red on it (it seems to not have enough red, now that I’m writing this post…) Lots of ornaments I found were tacky sculpey things of the wedding cake, or dried petals from the bouquet in a bulb, and this seems to go along with our Scandinavian/thrift store decor style. (I just made that theme up.)

Embroidered throw pillow!! – Newlywedded Nesting

I wanted to make Nic a gift for us for our wedding, and started this throw pillow during the spring. I got distracted by other wedding preparations, and then lost the bag that it was kept in, until a few weeks ago. My goal was to make a kind of kitschy pillow to commemorate the wedding, and I kinda like how it turned out.
I used a linen throw pillow cover from IKEA as well as their inserts. It’s 20×20″ and looks great on our bed.

Fun story, I originally embroidered “June 21, 2015.” That’s wrong. We got married on the 20th. Oops.

Friendsgiving Monday – Rattlesnake Point

On Thanksgiving Monday, Nic and I hopped in our Car2Go and drove to Rattlesnake Point in Halton Hills to see our friends.
