Skincare Routine

Skincare Routine - JanessaMann.Com

I recently had to restock some of my skincare favourites, so I decided I should post my current skincare routine. My skin is pretty sensitive so I can’t change up products frequently. I get a bit of hormonal (or chocolate-induced!) acne as well as some dehydrated patches.

Face Mask – Nutriganics Smoothing Mask from the Body Shop
Super helpful at getting impurities out of my skin. I often put it on before my shower, and then exfoliate it off.

Cleanser – MUJI Mild Oil Cleanser
Super great, gentle cleanser!

Exfoliator – cleanser and my washcloth
I tried a sample of one of First Aid Beauty’s exfoliators, and I would love to buy it, but it’s a little pricey.

Toner – apple cider vinegar and water
I just poured those into an old Body Shop bottle. It’s super gentle (and cheap!) and I just use it on a cotton pad.

Serum – The Body Shop Drops of Youth Concentrate  When I was searching for the link, I got worried that it was gone. Nope, just re-packaged. I didn’t feel the need to search out a serum, but I got sucked in to the store’s buy 2 get 1 sale, and I’ve been happy with the results.

Moisturizer – MUJI Moisturizing Milk
A really nice, light moisturizer.

Sunscreen – Ombrelle
The only sunscreen that doesn’t give me a rash on my face. So, yeah, I use it regularly.

Heavy moisturizer – shea butter
Sometimes I get little patches of dryness, or as a reaction to something, so I put shea butter on.

Acne treatment – tea tree oil
So good for you!

My Makeup Brush Collection and Care!

Makeup Brush Collection and Care - JanessaMann.Com

A short while ago I posted my vanity tour, and promised that I would be featuring my brushes and brush care soon. I have quite a few brushes in comparison with many women, but I don’t have any doubles. That would probably be useful!

Real Techniques Core Collection Set

I ordered the Real Techniques core collection on Amazon a few years ago.

Contour Brush – I alternate using this for my matte or shimmery bronzers
Buffing brush – what I use for my foundation brush
Pointed foundation brush – my under-eye concealer
Detailer brush – If I’m putting eye shadow under my eyes

Sephora brushes

Sephora #55 Pro Airbrush – for blush, soooo soft
#49 Pro Angled Brush – Contour
#73 Classic Crease Brush  – definitely can tell it’s worse quality than the pros, so someday I’ll invest in a pro one.

The Body Shop

Blusher Brush – Do not buy this for a blush brush. I now use it for my translucent powder.
Slant – Perfect for eye shadow liner

Sonia Kashuk, Loose Button & Quo

The only brush I use from these four is the Quo shadow brush, which gets the job done, but I definitely need another one, or to clean my brushes more frequently.

Wash with baby shampoo and warm water

Don’t bother buying expensive brush cleaners- baby shampoo works really well, and it has to be super gentle. I haven’t had any fiber loss over the 2+ years I’ve had most of these brushes, and it’s very cheap. I use Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo- the same $5 bottle I bought two years ago is still going strong!

Don’t go too hot on the water or it can damage the fibers. Keep on lathering and rinsing until the brushes are back to their original colour.

Letting it dry

I always set my brushes on a towel on the windowsill to dry over night. If you can, wash them once a week to prevent buildup of product and acne, but I usually go for twice a month.

IKEA Vanity Tour

Vanity Tour - JanessaMann.Com

For my birthday last year, Nic boughtvittsjo-laptop-table-brown__0135390_pe292080_s4 me the IKEA Vittsjo Laptop table to use as a vanity. I only installed it this summer when I moved to Toronto, and have been incredibly happy with it. During university, I just used the top of a
dresser and a small mirror on top of that to do my makeup, but I would always be hunching over it. When I was at my parents’ in Ottawa, I had it all spread out on my large bathroom counter. I knew for our first home, I wanted something I could sit at, and was minimal so it could be used for other purposes later in our life.

The Vittsjo table was only $39, as opposed to their actual vanities of above $100, and I’ve seen really cool adaptations of it into hallway consoles and bar carts. I just use a simple dining chair with it, and it’s perfect for my vanity.

Vanity Drawers

I ordered these drawers from Amazon several years ago, but you can find similar things at any home goods store. Inside I have blushes, bronzers, tools, and everything else.

I wouldn’t recommend the mirror I got from IKEA, the screws don’t stay tight, and the magnified side is warped a bit. The good thing is that it’s beside my mirrored closet doors, so I can always look in there.

Lips and Box

I also purchased this lipstick holder several years ago. Since I haven’t been adding that many lip products recently, and I get rid of old ones I don’t use, it’s the right size for me. I have it pretty organized, with nudes, reds, brights, corals, and pinks.

In the box beside it I keep sunscreens, primer, BB cream, foundation, and hair products.

How do you store your supplies?

A Sephora Haul

A Sephora Haul - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.Ca

Last week I went into the Yorkdale Sephora to pick up samples of foundations since I’m almost out of my Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Foundation. I knew that I wanted to get foundation from a brand that doesn’t do testing on animals, is good for sensitive skin, and preferably vegan.

Nancy, who works for Tarte, helped me out. We tested the Cover FX Natural Finish Oil Free Foundation and the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour full coverage foundation. I wore the Cover FX foundation for the rest of that day, and then used my sample on Friday. I decided I liked the Tarte foundation more. Also, Nancy was really great, and I had fun with her.

Why did I order it online? Because Sephora has coupons online for extra things-in addition to the foundation, I got some point perks, 3 samples (they threw an extra one in), and a lip gloss for having spent $25+.

The Estee edit by Estee Lauder – Dissolve the Drama 2-in-1 makeup remover + cleanser
tarte Amazonian clay 12-hour full coverage foundation in “light-medium sand”
First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads
laura mercier lip glace in “bare baby”
Dr. Dennis Gross alpha beta peel original formula
bareMinerals marvelous Moxie lip gloss  in “rebel”
Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-crease eye shadow primer
Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm

Swatchessss!!
bareMinerals “Rebel”
Laura Mercier “Bare baby”
On my nails: Essie “Turquoise and Caicos

For the lip glosses, I had kinda hoped that with the $25 coupon I would have gotten a choice on colour, because I want to try a more brown-y pink lip gloss, but that’s fine. I’ll just go to the drugstore and find something.

tarte “light-medium sand” – I’m not sure if in the store they had one that was separate for “light sand” because Nancy said I was the lightest colour. I think this one is dark enough that it’ll still work for me a while into summer, but it says 12 months use-by on the back.

Check back here at the end of the month to see if any of them make it into my favourites!

Shopping My Makeup Collection for Spring

Every once in a while I notice I’m in a makeup rut. I just go for whatever I’ve been using consistently, and forget about all my other products. I don’t have tons of makeup, but I do belive that if I have it, I should use it or get rid of it.

First I went through my eye shadows, bronzers, and blushes. Starting at the top of my arm for swatches, we have:
bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow 2.0 in Muse and Passion (the dark purple)
benefit Longwear Powder Shadow in Milk It! – beautiful white highlight
So Susan Universal blush
Clinique Glow Crazy Powder Highligher in 03 Gold Dust (years old, but I had saved it because I didn’t want to run out. Now I realize that’s pointless)
Clinique Sheer Powder Blusher in 21 Silk Bronze (I got this in middle school for dance recitals. It’s ten years old. I need to use it)
The Body Shop baked eye shadow duo in 02 moonstone

I work at a gym, so I almost never wear any colour on my lips. If I’m going out after work and have the rest of my makeup done, I might even wear a nude lipstick, but generally I just wear lip balm or a sheer lip gloss. With spring (possibly) approaching I knew I had to check out my old favourites.
Starting with the furthest left swatch:
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in 240 Striking
Clinique Chubby Stick Intense in 08 Grandest Grape
Burt’s bees lip gloss in Sunny Day
Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer in Apocaliptic
Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in 110

Spring Nails

Spring Nails - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.Ca

I don’t normally tailor my nail polish colours to the season- I just chose whichever colour I want, but I’ve noticed for the last few weeks I’ve been using purely spring colours, and I love it.

Spring Nails - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.Ca

My favourites are:
Essie “bikini so teeny,” “cute as a button,” “topless and barefoot” (my favourite neutral and what I wore on my wedding day!)
Morgan Taylor “Eye Candy” which I received in my Spring Luxe Box
NailsInc “Baker Street” and “The Thames
OPI “uh oh roll down the window

February Favourites

February Favourites - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.ca

February has been a pretty good month for me. My family came to visit, I went to #emptyROM, Nic and I tried out some new coffeeshops (Black Cat Espresso, Box Car Social, and Settlement Co), and I achieved some fitness goals!

February Favourites - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.ca
I love to read, and I’m currently working on my “What I Read in February” post. I also like to use the hashtag #whatjanessareads on Instagram, so you can always see some of the books I’m reading, or check me out on GoodReads.
I’m currently trying to follow through on my goal of reading all the Canada Reads 2016 books, and “Birdie” by Tracey Lindberg is the second one I’m on.
Check out my January books post.
February Favourites - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.ca

In yesterday’s post I talked about getting selected to go to #emptyROM, which was a super awesome event where about 10 of us got to go into the dinosaur room before the museum opened and photograph everything without having people in our shots. It was a lot of fun!

February Favourites - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.ca

For my product favourites, I don’t have many, but I do love these!
Joe Fresh Matte Sheer Tint in “bisque” – I was so excited to see that this BB cream lasts through a workout! And by workout I mean everything from yoga to legs day to stairmaster! I’m so happy with the results! It also doesn’t get too matte, so I don’t get dry patches.
NYX HD Concealer in CW01 – I haven’t found a concealer I like in a long time, so I was delighted to find this on sale at my Shoppers (so glad NYX is now here at Shoppers!). The colour is a great match for my under-eyes, and also lasts pretty well on any imperfections.
MAC “Kinda Sexy” matte finish – My favourite nude
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in “Diffused Heat” – This will probably always be my favourite blush. It’s so perfect to give you a great flush and glow with the gold streaked through it.
Burt’s Bees Honey Lip Balm with Vitamin E – just love.

Nic’s been growing this adorable sweet potato vine! I can’t wait until we have tons of vine to drape around everything.

February Favourites - TheCraftyMann.Blogspot.ca

When we were in Dollarama a couple of weeks ago, Nic decided he would buy this trellis for his golden pothus. It really adds a lot of character to our white bathroom!

I have gotten really into Crosswords this month. Yes, I sometimes cheat, but it’s really cool to notice how now I’m getting the hang of the secret language of crossword clues.
